Camden Shorinji Kempo is a modern Japanese martial art based in the heart of Camden.
We’ll help you to get fit and teach you how to practice mindfulness. One of the best things about our club is the promise of an active community of incredible people across London, the UK and the world. We’d love you to become a part of it!
Our martial art never relies on brute strength. Instead, we focus on weak points and use techniques that allow a smaller person to effectively defend themselves against a larger opponent.
As part of this, we practice shouting (Ki ai) at an attacker to teach you how to find your voice in any situation. Our practice balances ‘hard’ strikes (kicks and punches) and ‘soft’ grappling (escapes, locks and throws). We also teach restorative massage (seiho) and seated meditation (zazen), to help with mindfulness. All our classes centre respect and cooperation – it’s never a competition! We always aim to create a safe and encouraging environment even as we learn how to shout, punch, and kick.
We normally train in person on Thursday evenings from 7:00 – 8:30 pm in an upstairs room at The Oxford Tavern.
The nearest tube station is Kentish Town (on the Northern Line).
It’s a two-minute walk from the station to the Oxford Tavern and very easy to find!
We also hold a regular online session over Zoom. Join us on Sundays at 8pm and Tuesday’s at 8pm
Our other in person class is on Saturday mornings at the Camden Dance Academy.
