Camden Shorinji Kempo is a modern Japanese martial art that teaches practical self-defence.
Our classes balance fitness training, self-defence techniques and meditation practices. Not only will you leave feeling fitter, we will help you practice mindfulness and introduce you to a brilliant new community of incredible people across London, the UK and the world.
Our martial art teaches self-defence techniques that do not depend on size or strength. Our techniques will allow you to defend yourself against larger or stronger opponents, and our training is suitable for all fitness levels.
We also practice shouting (Ki ai) at an attacker to teach you how to find your voice in any situation. Our practice uses both ‘hard’ strikes (punches or kicks) and ‘soft’ grappling techniques. We also teach restorative massage (seiho) and seated meditation (zazen), to help with mindfulness.
All our classes centre respect and cooperation – it’s never a competition! We always aim to create a safe and encouraging environment even as we learn how to shout, punch, and kick.
All you need to bring is a bottle of water, some comfortable gym clothes, and an open mind.
We normally train in person on Thursday evenings from 7:00 – 8:30 pm in an upstairs room at The Oxford Tavern.
The nearest tube station is Kentish Town (on the Northern Line).
It’s a two-minute walk from the station to the Oxford Tavern and very easy to find!
We also hold a regular online session over Zoom. Join us on Sundays at 8pm and Tuesday’s at 8pm
Our other in person class is on Saturday mornings at the Camden Dance Academy.
